Ethical Hacking with Maltego

What is Maltego

Maltego is a comprehensive data mining tool that allows for data visualization and data information analysis.

Background

Figure 1. Transform hub
Have you ever desired to impress people and show off your inner-hacker without doing anything illegal? With Maltego, you can easily get more information about a website such as subdomains, emails, names, social media accounts, domain owner details, and detailed DNS information. Overall, Maltego specializes in passive and active enumeration, which is a way to do preliminary scanning of a target to identify potential weaknesses. Thus, it is one of the fundamental cornerstones of cybersecurity, for both hackers and professional penetration testers.

Are you convinced you need to use Maltego? Well, now it is time to identify which version of Maltego one ought to utilize. Maltego offers a free and paid version, and the version you pick depends upon your one’s needs. Maltego’s Community Edition allows 12 entities per execution of machine script while the professional paid version allows 10,000 entities. Additionally, the paid version provides access to additional powerful transforms. As shown in figure 1, downloading additional canonical transforms is as easy as the push of a button.

What are transforms and why would one want more transforms? A transform is a script that makes it easy to gather more information about a particular node that has been selected in Maltego. Essentially, transforms are what make Maltego an easy alternative for terminal virgins as well as useful for professionals looking to not think or quickly acquire information on a target.

Data Mining

Maltego provides innovative data analysis along with its features to enumerate collected data. With its elaborate library of plugins and tools this application is able to analyze online and offline information. A primary feature that distinguishes Maltego from other analysis tools is that it sustains features to compete automated queries and scripting commands. This allows for a more efficient and rapid data collection process by facilitating expedited collection in preparation for digital forensics and data mining.

Acquiring Emails

Figure 2. Easily running transformations
Getting emails from a domain is easy to do in Maltego. One needs to simply add the domain and right click the domain target then press “DNS from Domain” as illustrated in figure 2. As shown in figure 3, the free version will return up to 12 public email addresses if available if you are using a machine script to run the transformation. Why would this be useful information? The email addresses can be used to identify vulnerable accounts using https://haveibeenpwned.com. Additionally, the email addresses could be used to mass-blast one’s resume to the company highlighting the numerous reasons their organization will fail without you.

Acquiring, EVERYTHING

Figure 4. Run all view
Figure 5. All the associated nodes
However, running each individual transform can take a considerable amount of time when one is attempting to quickly acquire information on a target, especially when one has downloaded the additional transforms. Thus, one can run all of the transforms at once. This can be done by clicking “>>” under the “Run View”, as shown in figure 4. An example of all the information it will quickly return is shown in figure 5.

Large Footprint Activities

Figure 7. Script API
Figure 6. Large footprint activities screen
The previous transforms that were run were passive in the sense that the actions performed by the transform scripts are nothing unusual. These actions should be performed first, but still with care for certain websites that might have a lower threshold for what is considered “usual” activity on their network. For example, the FBI or the United Nations may be less forgiving of even passive scanning if certain subdomains are scanned. As displayed in figure 6, Maltego allows some forms of active scanning, which one must be careful of using. Maltego calls it a “footprint” rather than active scanning, but it does slightly inform you with a pop-up box that one ought to “use with care”. Maltego offers four levels of footprints: L1, L2, L3, and XXL. L1 simply runs through each node from top to bottom. L2, in addition to L1, will look for additional domains related to the shared name servers and mail servers. An L3 scan will do everything from L2, but will also look for reverse and historical DNS records. Finally, the XXL footprint searches for everything that it can possibly have access to. Additionally, one can see the code that the transform will run by pressing the configure button next to it. As displayed in Figure 6, the code for the transform will be displayed.

Acquiring Information From Target

Figure 8. Phishing website target
Figure 9. Finding the IP address
What kind of information can we get from just a url? It turns out that you can learn a lot about a website with a url and maltego. Using the paterva transformation, you can get such things as; city and country, ip addresses, phone numbers, MX and NS addresses, and other open source information.

First we start with a url. For this section a phishing website is used as our subject. As shown in figure 8, the url is to a website that tries to imitate the bank of america log in screen. Using the paterva transformation, To website, you can convert the URL entity to a website entity. With the website entity selected, you can then convert it to a domain and ip address which allows you to run multiple different, and more interesting, transforms.

Figure 10. Finding server location
From here you can click on the ip address and run all the transforms that relate to ip owner transformations, as displayed in figure 9. Finally, you can see that the ip address associated with the fishing website is located in Bremen, Germany, as demonstrated in figure 10.

Legality

Hopefully, you have not attempted to scan websites yet without considering the legality of your actions. First, this article is in no way legal advice, and one ought to learn one’s laws for your given country concerning passive and active scanning. After this thought, at least in the United States, as of September 17, 2019, there is no federal or local law that prohibits certain features of active scanning. Specifically, according the nmap (https://nmap.org/book/legal-issues.html), “no United States federal laws explicitly criminalize port scanning”, which is a large part of active scanning. Additionally, the same is true for vulnerability scans, and could be said for virtually every other type of active scan.

However, this does not mean that active scanning is not without its repercussions. One can get sued and end up in a criminal or civil court. Furthermore, an ISP can shutdown your internet if they get too many complaints. Although, according to Nmap, “legal cases involving port scanning are rare, they do happen”. The same can likely be said for many other types of active scanning, unless one tries to scan high-level target organizations. Overall, our recommendation is to not do active scanning without written permission.

Conclusion

Maltego allows you to get a quick and easy look at any network by using its customizable transformations and machines. This allows you to display complex connections between entities in a user friendly graph, while still retaining the ability to do in-depth reconnaissance and penetration testing, all from an easily navigable GUI.

Motorola SB6120 Cable Modem - Don't Buy Before You Read This Review

      By

I just got a great online deal on a Motorola SB6120 SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0 eXtreme Broadband Cable Modem, and would like to share my personal experience with this product by reviewing it here.
      Overview:
I was pleasingly surprised at the amazing performance boost in my COX Cable Internet speeds. The SB6120 was reasonably priced, easy to install, and it's raw speed will blow you away. I would highly recommend the Motorola Surfboard if you're in the market for a cable modem.
      What's in the Box:
The first thing I noticed when the SB6120 arrived was that it was noticeably smaller and lighter then my old Linksys device. The modem came packaged with a small AC power adapter and Ethernet network patch cable. Also included was a quick cable setup diagram and a documentation CD containing an Adobe PDF SB6120 users manual.
      SB6120 Installation:
Installation of my new Motorola Surfboard modem was very easy. I just disconnected & removed my old Linksys modem, connected the coaxial and network cables, and plugged it in. After installing the SB6120, I had to call my cable provider (Cox Cable in my case) and give them the serial number and MAC address of the new modem. These are printed on the modem and on the box. After following the Cox technicians simple instructions on rebooting my new modem, then restarting my home network router, I was online and happily surfing the Internet.
      Motorola Surfboard Performance:
I couldn't wait to jump over to speedtest.net to see what this baby could do. All I can say is WOW, I was getting over 30 Mbps download and almost 6 Mbps upload speed. These are very impressive numbers by any account, and a dramatic increase in speed over my old Linksys modems throughput.
      Key Features:
      • Super Fast - No Lag in Online Gaming
      • DOCSIS 3.0 backwards compatible to DOCSIS 2.0
      • Up to 4x faster than DOCSIS 2.0 modems
      • Gigabit Ethernet Port -10/100/1000 Base-T
      • Very Easy to Install and Use
      • No Additional Software Required
      Conclusion:
The Motorola SB6120 SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0 eXtreme Broadband Cable Modem is not the cheapest modem you can buy, but in my honest opinion it's one of the best values. The SB6120's speed, performance, features, and excellent customer reviews made it a no brainer for me, and I am very satisfied with the one that I purchased.
You can see videos and pictures of the Motorola SB6120 SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0 eXtreme Broadband Cable Modem that I couldn't include here in my site's Motorola SB6120 Review.

Is the Apple iMac Worth Biting Into?

Is the Apple iMac Worth Biting Into?
      By Austin Yarger

It was only this summer that I was first introduced into Apple's "mac family" as one cheerful Apple store representative put it. I have since had nearly a month with the big white machine, and have both positive and negative opinions to put forth. Has Mr. Jobs sold me on his magic white box?
First of all, it took but a single trip to the OSX base screen to realize that the iMac is all about user friendliness. With a big, magnifiable dock holding all of one's programs, a huge clear display, and a very friendly user settings and finder program, a monkey could use this thing-- a huge positive in my opinion. Whether or not this impedes a developer's use of Mac OSX is something I do fear however, but things overall look quite good, and clear, on the iMac's user-end.
iMac's definitely a looker with it's gorgeous wide-screen display, white aesthetic, and handsome software to match, but what can it do? Well, for starters, it can type this. It can make Power points and music. It can backup your files and provide a wireless network (via Time Capsule, which is brilliant by the way). It can develop Apps for the world's most popular devices. And all this is provided by Apple, which is, perhaps surprisingly, a problem. You see, Macs are generally higher-end systems, which means fewer people own them. This means that there are less consumers on the Mac platform for third-party companies to fish for, which means that they rarely, if ever bother to make Mac versions of their products. Many computer video games (which I have a particular interest in) are not available for the Mac. Emulation for Mac is a very scarce field as well, and Even products such as gimp that do have Mac versions are under-supported or buggy. Thankfully, Adobe and now Valve Software almost fully support the Mac platform, but there is still a ways to go before Mac consumers can enjoy the plethora of software options that Windows consumers have enjoyed for countless years--A big negative for the Mac platform.
Fortunately, there is a way around these deficiencies, since Mac can actually run Microsoft Windows quite well. Once running Windows, the previously unavailable third-party software options become available as if you were running a genuine PC. Of course, you must pay for another copy of a Microsoft operating system, and a little extra if you want to be able to run both Mac OSX and Windows at the same time, but it is undoubtedly worth it.
So is the Mac the machine of your dreams? If you can afford it, then yes. It has the power and abilities of both the beautiful Mac OSX, and the functional, deep Windows OS. So far the machine has been reliable, and I have read that the Mac OSX side of the computer is essentially virus-immune, though that remains to be tested. If you have a desire for elegance and user-friendliness, and you have a good Job, go ahead and buy into Steve Job's White Stallion box, and take a bite of the fresh new Apple generation.

Choosing Between a Desktop and Laptop Computer

      By Joseph Onibokun

These days we observe that laptops appear to be selling more than desktop computers. Most people either have one or want to have one. Walking on the high street today does not make this choice any easier because we are bombarded with all kinds of offers from mobile phone companies and electronic stores such as - "Buy one and get a laptop free!" How good is that?! Unfortunately, a visit to an ex-colleague's computer repairs shop which had its shelves loaded with stacks of broken laptops reminded me that not every shiny thing is gold.

While laptop computers are portable and easier to move around, they are not without their disadvantages. A laptop computer is significantly more expensive for comparable speed and capacity and does not have as much power as a desktop computer. Furthermore they are less expandable and are usually quite difficult to upgrade. They are often besieged by heating problems and generally have shorter lifespan as they are more prone to failure than their desktop counterparts. Most laptops would therefore usually last for between two and three years before a possibly irreparable damage occurs.

      Although I would personally go for a desktop computer 3 out of 4 times, my advice to anyone who cannot make up their mind is not just to go with the trend but carefully consider their needs. So therefore if you answer 'Yes' to all the following questions, the obvious choice for you should be a desktop computer;

o Will you be working with graphics, multimedia and playing lots of action games?

o Would you like to upgrade your computer regularly?

o Do you spend long hours on the computer?

o Are they more than one or two users?

o Do you have a limited budget?

Canon Powershot SD3500 Compact Digital Camera

       By Joseph Clayton

This small and simple to use digital camera is a great buy for any person wanting a camera to produce crisp and clean photos while out and about. It has a lightweight construction and is very durable as well with a solid metal shell. The Canon Powershot SD3500 is one of the best buys for your money as it is loaded with tons of special features.

Standard with this camera are many wonderful features setting it way apart from the average digital camera. The awesome touch screen is among the most pleasing features of this camera. The screen is very responsive, easy to use, and is a whopping three and a half inches wide.

Using the touch screen prevents you from having to fiddle with so many dials and buttons. This sleek camera has no buttons at all giving it a cool futuristic look. The touch screen is perfect for one who likes to customize their electronics because you can change things with the touch of your finger instead of worrying about dials getting changed in the middle of your photos.

About any image you wish to capture and keep forever can easily be taken with this twenty four mm lens. The images that can be taken with this camera are not quite as large as a non digital camera, but they are still very large for a digital camera, and it will likely be sufficient for anything most people want to photograph.

The five times digital zoom, is another awesome feature of the Canon Powershot, and it will allow you to get right up close pictures without having to get that close in person. Images you capture will have the appearance of a shot you got right next to; for instance, if you wish to take a photo of birds way out on a lake you can be relatively far off and have a clear image of them with the five times digital zoom.

Image stabilization is a feature that can be implemented to get a clear image even when you can't hold still yourself. On a boat or taking pictures from a moving vehicle is made possible when using this stabilization feature, which is difficult to do with most other cameras that do not offer this tool. One can attain a level of crispness that is beyond what you may have been able to achieve with other cameras.

On top of all the technical options that come standard with this camera, it also is available in a variety of colors, including black, silver, and even pink. The camera also has a wrist band to keep you from dropping it into a lake or losing it in the woods.

Any beginner or novice photographer will be pleased with the pictures that are possible with this camera. It is great because you can take great pictures without having to learn all the technical things you need to know using a professional grade camera. Its slim design makes it convenient to put into any bag or even in your pocket, making it ready to use whenever you need it.
